Russell’s Rules #1 There is never enough time -- and that's never an excuse.

"Time flies. It's up to you to navigate."

What isn’t getting done because of this excuse?

Managers who are always waiting for the right time will never find it. When times are good you are swamped and don’t have time, then when times are bad you are busy trying to bring in more revenue and cut costs so that's not the right time either. If you wait for enough time, you will eventually find it -- when you shut down your business -- and then it's too late.

Great leaders find a way to get things done, and get them done properly without cutting corners. Make deadlines mean something. Communicate clearly so you aren't losing time having to re-explain information. Not enough time usually indicates lack of planning, improper staffing or serious time wasters filling a day. Once the excuse of “not enough time” is removed, the real reasons for not getting things done become more clear.

Just do this…

  • Identify the “urgent” that demands time.
  • Identify the “important” that is being ignored because of the urgent.
  • Discover what makes the “urgent” appear so frequently.
  • Focus on fixing urgent problems first.
